The PS6 - PlayStation 6 is still a few years away, but that hasn’t stopped leaks, speculation, and excitement from piling up. Sony has always pushed gaming forward with faster hardware and smarter AI, and if the rumors are true, the PS6 could take things even further.

With the PS5 - PlayStation 5 now in the later years of its lifecycle, it’s only natural to start looking ahead. Here’s what we know so far—based on leaks, speculation, and educated guesses about its hardware, features, and release date.

Ever since the PS5 launched, speculation about the PS6 - PlayStation 6 has been simmering in corners of the internet. By now, those whispers have turned into full-blown rumors that are backed by some intriguing clues.

The consensus among many industry watchers is that the PS6 - PlayStation 6 is still a few years away – most likely late 2027 at the earliest. Several clues point to that timeframe. For one, the historical pattern is a new PlayStation roughly every 6 to 7 years.

The PS5 - PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, so add seven years and you get late 2027. Interestingly, that aligns with information from the Microsoft-Activision acquisition documents which suggested Sony’s next console wouldn’t land before 2027.

We don’t have any official number for the PS6 - PlayStation 6 yet (and likely won’t until launch is close), but analysts are already speculating. The PS5 launched at $499 for the standard model (and $399 for the Digital Edition), and the PS5 Pro – a mid-generation upgrade – came out at a hefty $699.

In fact, some think Sony set the PlayStation 5 - PS5 Pro’s price high to test the waters to see if gamers would stomach a nearly $700 console.

According to one industry observer, the expectation is that the PS6 - PlayStation 6 could launch around $600 given these trends

PS6 Rumored Upgrades

Now, what has Sony actually said or done about the PS6 - PlayStation 6? Officially, not a whole lot – they haven’t come out and announced “PS6” by name or shown off any hardware. However, we do have a few confirmed breadcrumbs that hint at its existence and direction:

PS6 Processor and Chipset

Perhaps the most concrete information we have comes from the tech side. Reuters reported in September 2024 that Intel had actually tried to win the contract to supply the PlayStation 6 - PS6’s processor, but ultimately lost out to AMD.

In other words, Sony has likely already chosen AMD to design the core chipset for the PS6 - PlayStation 6 (just as they did for PS5 and PS4). That’s a pretty big deal – it means the machine’s fundamental tech is in development. This also implies the PS6 will stick with an AMD CPU/GPU architecture, which bodes well for things like backward compatibility since it’s an evolution of the PS5’s tech.

Next-Gen AMD CPU & Graphics

It’s almost certain that the PS6 - PlayStation 6 will use a custom AMD chip, just like the PS4 and PS5 before it. Sony and AMD have been partners for years, and industry insiders say that relationship will continue.

In fact, there are reports that Sony has already finalized the design of the PlayStation 6 - PS6’s processor, with prototypes expected to be tested by late 2025. If true, this means Sony has locked in the core technology that will power the console.

From what’s been leaked, the PS6 - PlayStation 6 could run on AMD’s upcoming Zen 6 CPU and RDNA 5 graphics, which is the next evolution of the chips inside the PS5.

In other words, that would mean faster processing speeds, more realistic graphics, and smoother frame rates. Imagine playing a massive open-world game like Elden Ring 2, but with zero loading screens, richer details, and lifelike lighting effects—that’s the kind of leap we could be looking at.

Expected Models

Sony could be planning two versions of the PS6 - PlayStation 6. Perhaps we’ll see a base model and a higher-end “Pro” model launching in the same generation, or one of those chips could even be for a new PlayStation handheld device that complements the PS6.
